  1. 1. Should marijuana be legalized?

Not sure about zero, but an insignificant amount low enough to have no effect on driving ability.

Anybody who has smoked in the last couple of weeks is likely to still have a tiny reading.

I'm all for smoking pot, but the benefits of legalizing it are far outweighed by the cost of its implementation.

The government would want to tax and control the substance, and there is already a firmly established black market, that lacks any organizational structure.

It's easy to say 'legalizing pot is good because you can wean users off it' but in reality, the taxes implemented could just drive existing and new consumers into said black market.

So you would have a legalized, taxed and controlled substance generating no income for the government, and potentially causing public nuisance...

The laws regarding weed are pretty lenient here unlike the US, cops here aren't ego tripping dicks like in the US.

I got busted a couple of times, all of which I've just had my joint or saddy bag confiscated and hopefully destroyed and not enjoyed hehe..

Mind you that was in Canberra..

Why can't people enjoy macadamia nuts instead?

More importantly, if people started smoking macadamia nuts instead of eating them and developed lung cancer as a result, should we ban them?

f**k what is this wank. No, you just eat the nuts. That shit is retarded, don't get my Macadamia nuts banned.

What about space cookies - surely people can enjoy THC through that and NOT get lung cancer?

That is my point.

The argument that weed is bad for you comes from the idea that smoking it causes lung cancer.

This seems to be more than enough to justify banning the substance in its entirety despite the many other ways of consumption.

By that same logic we should be able to ban just about any edible substance by sticking it in a bong.

Sorry, I meant 0 in the last ~6 - 12 hours.

We'd need better testing methods to get an accurate instant reading of current inebriation. Or we could go back to the sobriety test.

TOPIC CHANGE BECAUSE THIS DISCUSSION IS GOING UP IN SMOKE

Should Aboriginals be charged a toll when entering petrol stations? At present they can pass through and score a free sniff. Should such legislation also include gays, muslims and refugees just in case?

So you think pot turns people into deadbeats, but when I say the state where it was virtually legal to grow for decades is full of deadbeats, you argue that people from state where drugs are most illegal are dumber?

You are contradicting yourself now, if you actually believed that pot made people stupid you would agree that SA would be full of deadbeats since it was decriminalised there for a long time, and it has the highest rate of smokers in Australia.

People seem to have different reactions to long term pot smoking which could just be their personality traits anyway. I have successful pot smoking friends but I also have a couple who are in their 30s, live at home and haven't ever really had a proper job. I know myself that heavy weed use can be very demotivating but it doesn't seem to affect some people as much or at all.

Kind of on topic but off topic.

Anyone hear about the push to propose licenses for people who want to smoke tobacco?

Like you need to sit a knowledge test just like a car license, get your card and then your allowed to buy.

Anyone hear of that?

No, however it sounds stupid enough to be legitimate NSW legislation.

Bullshit!! I bet you have met a shit load of people who smoke it who aren't deadbeats. over 50% of Australians have smoked weed.

I smoked weed for 5 years, have completed a diploma, i have a trade, doing really well for myself. I can understand some what of what your trying to say. Although, i know plenty of people who are working professionals who smoke weed, and i know lots of people who don't smoke i who are f**king dead beats.

You cant let a plant define your life, if you want something. Go f**king do it, don't blame a plant or drug/alcohol for your habit.

IMO the difference is when people started smoking. People who started using cannabis in high school, well, yeah, if they are chronic users and continue it's use heavily, they're you're typical deadbeats (not in all cases, just generally).

But people who started using cananbis later in life, or at university, tend to be you're really successful types, or you're unaffected types. The other big difference is rate of use. People who start young tend to use a lot more, people who start late tend to use cannabis more moderately.

We also can't ignore the fact that deadbeats are drawn to drugs and alcohol as a form of escapism. If you're already an idiot with no prospects, it helps you get through your day. You have to be careful not to call people deadbeats because they're pot smokers, rather than, they're pot smokers because they're deadbeats.

It's like blaming homelessness on alcohol. Homeless people aren't homeless because they're alcoholics, (some of them) are alcoholics because they're homeless.

Heavy use of any psychoactive substance will generally lead to complications/degradation of physical or mental health.

A psychoactive substance (drugs) change your brain chemistry for 'x' amount of time, from it's normal equilibrium. Of course long term use will change your brain chemistry. Sometimes it's minimal, other times it's more severe. This however, is so situationally dependent on the user, their genetics, predisposition/markers for psychosis (or other mental illness), general lifestyle, and how often/much they use the substance.

To group all weed smokers into the deadbeat category is astoundingly naive. More people use than you would probably care to imagine.

The fact that they're deadbeats rarely has much to do with the drug itself. Chances are they had more than 1 of the character traits they do now which causes them to appear as such to you (Eevo). The OTHER substances they may use/abuse never seems to be taken into account either. It's all "oh they smoke alot of weed, that must be the cause of their hopeless life."

I know plenty of hippies with no jobs who smoke weed, that travel from place to place just cruising by. I also know professionals from all types of fields (as does Sid280), who not only use marijuana, but other (what you would call) 'harder' substances for recreational purposes. Does this make them deadbeats?

The statistics on this nations drug use is FAR FAR FAR underrepresented.

I suggest everyone read it (if it already hasn't been posted in this thread. I haven't bothered looking through the past 4 pages because really I CBF on an issue like this).

Heavy use of Hamburgers will give your heart disease, heavy use to alcohol will rot your liver, heavy use of cigarettes will give you lung cancer, heavy hours of work and not enough rest will result in stress related mental problems, Heavy use of sport can cause joint problems, heavy related use of shoving a fork in ones eye will cause blindness.

The fact remains is this - You can abuse anything. The key is moderation. Just because so many people use too much marijuana doesn't mean it should be illegal you aren't protecting anyone from it keeping it illegal.
