Cheap seats? Whos bought what and where?

I'm chasing a cheap bucket seat for my s13 and wondering how many other people have used copy versions and how they found them I really don't care about the genuine ones aslong as it holds me its good enough :) More concerned about height wise i'm short so if it sits about the same as stock s13 seats it will be perfect to low and I won't be able to see :P

 

What did you get? where did you get it? How much did you pay? How have you found it? Did it come with rails?

dont go a copy.. there are heaps of photos of them snapped in half, and the person in them suffering serious spinal injuries..

 

just get one real one, like i have.. dont worry about being too short.. all the seats sit higher up anyways..

I have a recaro sr3 reclinable in my 180, sits in pretty much the stock position height wise. Pretty comfy and holds you in well. Got it for like 400 with rail off a mate. As most people would probably say don't go cheap on stuff like seats.

SAU was doing group buys on two copy brides without rails for $500.

Pretty cheap if they're any good.

but going to run GTR in the laurel for track+street+stealth

probs only get a seat thats been through relevent testing, have seen a fake bend in a crash. Not worth it.

You can pick up secondhand brides or velo fixed back for cheap.

 

yeah, you can get single Velo's for cheap cheap.. def's gonna go one of those next when i get sick of my gigantic one..

Check the classifieds, importers, etc. As all have said, genuine should be considered the only safe option; whether it be genuine aftermarket or factory Nissan/Toyota/Mazda/etc.

 

I run Recaro SR4s and highly recommend them, although they weren't cheap, despite being a forum purchase. Too many legit-looking fake Brides on the market, so I'd steer clear of the brand unless sourcing it from Japan yourself.

Whatever you get, just make sure you test them first, as base size varies greatly. This is particularly relevant to girls (wider hips) so when measuring the seat, keep in mind the dimensions of your chick or the kind of girls you usually go for.

i got a genuine brix 1.5, and its super comfy/holds snug, but it was quite expensive, ive got one of the holford brides in my track car, and its not bad, however i was using a no name seat that came from japan in a friends car, and it felt stronger than the bride replica, and appears to have a big X shape reinforcing the back.

i have a cobra recliner seat too, but its like some terrible cross between arm chair and bucket seat.

i find the brides slots/holes for harness are a little low for me, and the recaros in my girlfriends evo feel better, but arent bolstered enough.

You're correct in saying that there exist other ADR approved seats, however of the ones that are ADR approved and would presumably hold up, all have failed to impress me in terms of quality of fit, finish and durability.

 

The overwhelming majority of copies, particularly the genuine-looking replicas, are not ADR approved.

Copies have proven to collapse on impact, and if the seat can't hold you the belt is rendered useless, so you're just generally f**ked.

I would sooner retrofit the buckets from an MA70 Supra, in complete 80s velour trim, than fit fake Brides.

 

My perspective is this; if a seat is used on a production car (e.g. Recaro SR3 on the Honda Integra, Recaro SR4 on the EVO, GTR buckets, etc) you know how it will perform in a crash based on crash footage and independant safety ratings. Not just in this country either, which could be more relaxed than others.

ADR approval requires a bank of tests, and I did look into this once, but I'd always be left wondering about the full extent of the testing. Not to mention, crash testing products is seriously expensive, so how many $250 seats do you have to sell to overcome the overhead... makes you wonder how many are being misrepresented.

 

With genuine seats that are used in production cars, you have no such worry, because you have a fair understanding of their performance.

Furthermore, if they were acquired from a production car, rails and all, then you also know their authenticity.

yeah like i know most fakes arent sturdy at all, but what i meant was there are other options out there that are fairly rigid...but you make a good point i guess the cheaper brands could possibly be misrepresenting what sort of approval they have...

 

personally a cheap alternative for seats are companies like velo, sparco and the such have good quality mid range seats...

If you have rear seats in a coupe, the front must recline. Velo are basically fixed back only.

 

From what I gather, Sparco aren't ADR approved (they hold only FIA approval) and judging by the prices of their fixed back seats, they're just as expensive.

Both make nice seats though.

U can't have a fix back bucket seat in a 2 door car unless it's registered as a 2 seater

they can't get into the back in the first place, so no need for them to get out! :)

 

 

FWIW, i'll be getting a pair of 33GTR seats in my 180. I loved how they felt in my GTR, so i figure they'll be the goods in the 180. Although, comparing them to the recaros in my evo won't be fair.

i really only have my rear seats cos i dont want a messy looking empty space in the back...i dont actually ever use the rear seats...

I'm with you mate - i want to remove my rear seats/trim altogether but don't want defects. Might look into the 2-seat rego..

on the topic of saffety though, if a seat is fia approved, wouldnt it be just as good, if not better than being adr approved?? Surely the fia would have stricter/more thorough testing than adr..
