New T28 framed Garrett GTX-R turbos

Hey Guys,

 

I saw this morning that Garrett have released two new GTX-R turbos in T28 size.

so basically i can buy this and put it in my garrett and possibly get even MORE power out of it instead of buying a whole new turbo?

Just doing some reading on these new turbos. Both look very promising. I'm particularly impressed by the 2863R. It sounds as if it has peak power slightly less than the regular GT2871 but maintains the response of the 2860RS. I'm all for street response!

 

Are ATP the only stockist at this stage? I'm very keen to see some dyno sheets of it bolted to an SR20. :) Good alternative to a Precision 5128 perhaps...

I used to like Honeywell / Garrett but after reading recent articles about their turbos, I'm not so sure about them.

It would be a silly mistake for people to take this as gospel tohugh until there is solid proof. Even so, it's Honeywell so something like this wouldn't surprise me.

Quite disturbing if true. You would expect the failures to be public knowledge by now if it really was the case though. Everyone with a Garrett turbo bought in the last 12 months, how are they going? :)

Specs on paper don't mean diddly squat .... Need real life results dyno graph etc .... I love super responsive yet powerful turbos

anymore data on these turbo's i googled around its still pretty quiet so far also the rear housing looks like and option

still very quiet it seems strange there are no reports not even bad ones so far

 

RAI motorsport has a dyno of one & a dyno sheet of a gtx3071r

Well, I've bitten the bullet due to package constraints and budget to conforming with a GTX2863R.

 

The map shows a potential of 440hp. With the 0.86 A/R that could probably flow that much but I'm hoping to achieve 400hp at the fly and sit between 240-250 rwkw with faster spool than a disco 2860RS.

 

I'll be getting it tuned mid next month so I'll be posting results in the turbo reference section.

we just bought a GTX2863 for a customer - however is going on a 4.2L turbo diesel - so wnt help much

 

but the more we do i will post results

Some one in the know told me a few things about the GTX2871R , spools like a reg 2863, power just off reg 2871 etc, however true that is... I want to see a comparison of T28bb to a GTX2863.

A just worst low end and doesn't tapper-off post 6k would be what I'd like to hear.

...Maybe not. Not sure when to call it quits and say car is finished.

Well there are only 2 new GTX turbos for the T28 frame:

 

GTX2863R which appears to flow a little less than the GT2871R and the GTX2867R which flows a little more than the GT2871R (looking at the 52 trim).

 

Knowing that the billet turbos can tolerate boost pressure much better and provided the flow is there, I believe the results will surprising since the compressor to turbine ratio is better matched allowing for an increase in flow efficiency. i.e the compressor map will actually hit the spots that it should a lot easier and quicker too.

I want to know about that red split pulse Vband housing, I could make a mad manifold with that and a GTX2867r, it would spool like a stock turbo and provide over 300kw on e85. I emailed Garrett with no answer, ATP in the US told me the housing was to be released in early summer...

 

Hopefully they will make them for GT30 and 35's too.

Yeah don't quote me on the number to relate to the turbos, all knew was that it was a 287-something, thought maybe 2871 like the old one.

Wouldn't be so sure on that. First thing is that the compressor should be able to hit nearly off the map with 98 RON anyway. For the GTX2867R, it can only flow 46 lbs/min = 460hp at the engine. You'll probably hit like 280 rwkw on e85 most possibly with an 0.86 A/R due to the amount of gasses that E85 emits. This is all by a somewhat educated guess.

 

Split pulse / twin scroll for such a small turbo wouldn't be a massive gain for response but there may be some. I asked horsepowerinabox and they never heard of a split pulse for the new GTX 28xx series.I think it was more for show than anything else. If you really want a good rear housing just get a TiAL 0.60 housing with a 38mm wastegate but you'll need adapters for the v-band connectors.

 

Alternatively just use the Garrett housing or wait for the next scavenge of Borg Warner EFR turbos.

the 2863 will be great for the street its a good choice there & like me everyone is really wanting some true data on these new GTX range

I already run a GTX3071 with the Tial 1.06 rear, spools nicely to 23psi by 4k on my VQ25det making 335kw so far. Definitely better to go with the next larger housing with the GTX compressors that way you don't strangle the flow.

I was wondering if I should have gone with the larger housing but left it as I wanted response over power.

 

I've heard through the grapevine that the GTX2863R 0.64 A/R made 230rwkw with a Dyno Dynamics dyno on 17 PSI with stock cams on an S14 motor. Provided the flow is there, 250rwkw is achievable with step 1 cams based on that information.

 

Hopefully my tune will isn't far off (2 - 3 weeks?), I'll keep everyone posted.

His is on a bigger motor. I think you went down the right path for a street car...

 

But 230rwkw with stock cams... that's better then a 2871 with stock?
