Wheel Widening

Recommended Posts

this is how they widen one piece wheels in America, they do it to both cast and forged wheels

5179kn.jpg

However in Aus this is not street legal as the rules state that there must not be more then 1 continuous weld when widening wheels

so a solution would be to cut off the outer lip of the wheel and get a new lip spun up and welded on

don't know if anyone in in Aus would do such a job and guarantee the work

^ That's how I thought I'd go about doing it. Extending the inside. But then I thought of the legal issue.

And combined with the cost, I thought it would be the most anit-econimical thing. Might as well just get as set of RPF1 - they look factory.

Three piece metal spun rim sections are available.

Many sizes can be manufactured - sizes include:

8", 9", 10”, 12”, 13”, 14”, 15”, 16”, 17”, 18” Diameter, and;

16.1” Tractor Pull Rims in 4.0mm 6061 Aluminium T6.

Material Specifications include:

1. Light Weight application 3.0mm 5005 Aluminium.

2. Medium low budget application 4.0mm 5005 Aluminium.

3. Top quality 4.0mm 6061 “T6” heat treated rim sections, and 5.0mm 6061 “T6” is available for larger diameter, deeper inner sections. All sizes include inner and outer profiles, to accommodate maximum brake clearance.

4. Cast Aluminium and Magnesium and billet centres are available from some of our below-mentioned race wheel suppliers.

We supply wheels from Formula SAE, to Porsche Cup, Sport Sedan Series, Sprint Car, Formula Holden, Midgets and Off Road Buggies, and any other wheel rim application.

All of our rims are of the Simmons style.

Stepped and reverse mounts are available.

We would need a sample wheel or centre to work off to make sure the centre bore is accurate.

Typical turn around times vary from 4-6 weeks due to workload and heat treatment processes.

Prices vary according to diameter and width. As an example a 17 x 5 stepped outer barrel is around $150.00 with polishing an extra $35.00

Hope this provides some insight into how wheels are made.

Cheers

Craig

i believe its a standard $150 for each barrel 14"-17" and i dont think the width does matter much as i pm'd for a 15" outer barrel with the same $150 as a rough quote

is that cut to remove old outer/in-er, the new in-er/outer and then welded back up again to finish the wheel?

or just a outer/in-er barrel?

So crack. If I was to buy some shitty width and offset meshies you can pretty much make them any width and offset I want?

Does it matter if they are 2 or 3 piece? Or can u just make the 2 piece into 3 piece with the new lips.

preferably 3 piece. if two piece there needs to be enough depth of spigot on the center. spigot being the step that locates the rim to the center.

come on guys. if you want wider wheels or want to change the offset of your wheels, give me a call. simmons, work, kakimoto, bbs. i don't care. so long as it's a three piece wheel.

note:white horse only make the metal things that are round n stuff give http://www.easternwheelworks.com.au/ a call on a quote to cut and reweld the rim back together if you supply the outer/inner half roughly $150 on each section regardless of diameter/width i presume.

hmm i've got a question Craig

can you guys do step up lips and barrels and how much would they be?

for example stepping 15" step lip wheel to a 16" or 15" to 17"

i've seen it done before but not sure if anyone in Aus does that

this is the kinda thing i'm after

pic is of Mugen M7s stepped from 15" to 17"

can easily be done. pricing comes down to width of rim sections needed. best to come in if your local with the wheel so i can measure up and show you in person.
