hi all

just bought a new Olympus e-520 dslr, and have been playing around with it for the last week getting to know the features as im new to the world of slr cameras..looking forward to putting a pic in the photo battles

any one else here have the same camera and have any tips?

 

few of the pics that i have taken so far mostly practicing on the fishies..not the best but i'm leanring

Your goldfish look like willing subjects

 

I totally agree with the others, nothing substitutes for practise.

 

A tip for the fish shots;

- if you want the fish to be sharp from nose to tail (in shots 4 and 6) , DOF (depth of field) is important and its easier to get full sharp shots when the fish is parallel to your focal plane. ie sideways, not facing you. If its facing you then you need a larger DOF (f stop) to get the whole body sharp.

ah k..slowly getting through the manual and learning things as i go..but theres a bit to learn, not just point and shoot lol

was sort of difficult to get the fish where i wanted them, they kept on hiding and only when i put a bit of food in they slowed down and came out haha

 

also tried taking some pics at mallala drift practice on saturday, but got there when it was dark so had a bit of trouble trying to get pics with out noise i think its called lol

just a few more pics from screwing around, i would put up some of the pics from the drifts but none were really any decent lol got a few stacks tho with the sequential shooting tho, but bit out of focus

haha nah no finger..just dead leaves lol

with the drift pics was fairly dark so not very bright, and was struggling with a low shutter speed to get things in focus..first time photographing moving cars lol and i was fairly lazy and just sitting at the top of the grandstand instead of getting up close haha

iv got no idea what settings i was using and the pictures are no longer on my camera, just on the copm.i was going through every setting testing it out. found that it worked sort of better with a higher iso setting i thinhk it was,

 

lens is a 40-150mm 1:4-5.6.. so was probably zooming to much when icould have walked closer for the pics lol

also havea 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6

they came as a lens kit with the camera

 

will see how it goes in the comingweek at the super drift thing that is on(its during the day) so hopefully get some better pictures..will practice on cars driving past my house from the balcony

I'm not a fan of high ISO, but as you learn more, you will know how to maximise your gear for low light shooting

 

at least you're panning on the cars to keep them sharp with longer exposures.

 

faster lenses will help, but the camera sensor is the limiting factor...

took a few pics to get a hang of the panning..im guessing it would be alot easier during alot better lighting..so should be interesting to see what i can get next time..will even try to move around instead of jsut sittting in one spot being lazy haha

Good lighting is crucial especially for action shots.

Next time you try in the day time you will get much better results.

cheers the snake was a bit hard to get pics of cause he was covering his face most of the time with the rest of his body and didnt really wanna move him.. as for the scorpion i am painting a rec center at work and it was jsut there in the store room near our paint..was dead tho but i never seen one before so was awesome haha

To be honest, its there to be used.

 

and i say don't be afraid to go abit higher.

Ok some cameras just are shocking in the higher ranges like my D200 gets pretty noisy at 800ISO but i mean don't set it at 100 and thats it. Don't completely rule out high ISO, its there to be used.

You also need to compensate with shutter speeds accordingly to keep noise to a minimum. Unfortunately unless you're spending thousands on the camera it's often not a good idea to shoot at high ISO.

 

Also it might be just me but the second snake pic doesn't seem as sharp as it could be and the velodrome is a bit on the high side of exposure..

ah well

was fun taking pics of drips and other liquid things, especially the air filtered taps..its just hundreds of bubbles lol

 

will try some sunset pics with in the week and got the d1 drift contest in adelaide so first time back out to photograph cars *charges battery* lol

i reckon you did real well man. top location for the tandem/team drifts.

they started getting a bit dark towards the end of the set though, but meh, it happens.
