I thought it may be interesting to know what you girls do for a living!

 

atm i work in Xray as a medical receptionist but at some stage i may be looking for a change...

My job is hard to explain, but I’ll give it a go.

 

I work for a major bank as an International Business Manager, sometimes it’s referred to as a Manager Trade Finance also.

 

Basically I help customers set up Trade facilities and help them ongoing also. So Importing, Exporting, Foreign Currency Accounts, Rates and Finance for Trade.

 

If you have ever heard about Import/Export Letters of Credit, Trade Finance, Import/Export Documentary Collections, Foreign Currency Accounts, they are the main things I look after. It’s hard work as it can get very messy and there are thousands of laws and regulations to comply with. If you ever get bored try reading the UCP600…. Not fun let me tell you!

 

I don’t have any direct reports and I need to create my own work. The work is very seasonal as you can imagine so I can have quiet times… like now and complete mayhem in a few months time. I have targets to reach so it can get very full on and high stress but there are good points to the role too.

I am a primary school teacher....this year I have a composite class (Year 1 & Year 2). I am also a registered Marriage Celebrant so this is an extra curricular type of income that I'm just starting now.

Im after a celebrant BUT im in SA and will prob get one locally.

 

Im thinking about studying cert 3 in tourism at tafe next year, my father is a promotions manager and major events co-ordinator for a council in Victoria and its quite interesting to see what he does. They also are starting up a vineyard to it would help with that too.

It is interesting and with everything that goes on and all the rule changes and sanctions it's always changing. So it means it never gets boring.

 

No degree, but I did need to get all the required accreditations for my role I think there was about 5 external and 20 internal. You can do some courses with FINSIA, they are very full on but as you go higher or branch into more specialist roles they become required.

 

After I left school I worked in finance 2 years then I went to uni. I studied Communications (Media Advertising) and needed a distinction average to transfer to the course I really wanted to do but missed out, I got 2 credits and 2 distinctions so It was considered a credit average. After that I left uni and went back to work. I went to work in retail for 3 months and realised it was not for me so I applied for a role in the bank. It was above the normal entry level role but it was still a call centre/customer relations role yeah got bored of that after 18months. So I told my boss I was going for a role in Trade and he said I wouldn't get it anyway so why bother ( I disliked him he had the wrong attitude towards staff and customers, but it made getting the role ever sweeter!). I scored the Trade Consultant role, and then after 12months of that this job came up so I jumped on it! I learnt as much as I could when I was in my last role and this helped me get into this role. It's hard to work your way up but well worth it. If you work for a bank you have a lot of options that's for sure!

He does have a good job BUT as he is trying to bring people to the Grampians in victoria there are businesses within that area that dont think he is doing the right thing when these businesses expecting everything from nothing. Sucks but still.

 

Now he has 6 acres of grapes to look after too, lol plus eventually starting up cellar door sales, so i better get cracking!

partner and i can own our own panel/paint shop in a few years as he is a qualified

panel beater..

but really unless i pay to go to tafe and waste all my nights, the only other option is traineeship and the money is sooo bad!! but i guess i just have to if thats wat i want to do..

I completed a traineeship in 2006 was on $300 a week! got a cert II in business too... which doesnt really mean much to me, lol.

 

I couldnt go back to crap wages but when it was better than working part time it was ok... plus i have a few more expenses now and saving for a house so wouldnt go back to a traineeship.

You really shouldn't view it as a waste to spend your nights studying at Tafe. If you do a business managment course you will learn valuable skills that will be vital to owning a business.

 

The course may be 12 months or 2 years of nights. You can sometimes also choose to just complete certain units that are more important to you straight away.

 

12 months or 2 years of a few nights a week is nothing compared to spending 100k on a business loan only to see it fall to pieces in the first 12 months like majority of small businesses because you did not have the required skills to manage it successfully.

 

Friendly advice ... if you are concerned about losing your nights or not earning much money then I DO NOT suggest you own a business. Most business owners will not take a wage for a considerable amount of time. The founder of McDonals did not take a wage at all for 6 years.

i should have worded it a bit better.. its certainly not a waste of time but i work all day then if i go to tafe all night i just wont have time to do anything fun let alone just normal stuff that has to be done

i have done a traineeship before and i think theyre great except for the money..

 

my expences have gone up too, i just got a loan for my car and just trying to pay the daily bills..

i think ill do great running a business (not trying to blow my own horn) but i dont mind putting in the hours and the work because its rewarding, i just dont like what im doing now.

working my bum off and im not going to get anywhere.

if i work my bum off in my own business i have somthing thats mine that i can be proud of..

I used to be a Licensed Conveyancer but after 5 years I couldnt stand working in law firms anymore.

For the last 2 years I have been work for a big European based Freight Forwrding company (Import/Export), at the moment Im Team Leader for Ocean Fright Transport but plan to be moved into a supervisors role for the whole Ocean Freight department within 6 months or so.

 

Otherwise I would be more then happy to use my studies in Quality Management within the company too, just depending on support from management and availability.

Its a pretty good industry actually, for only being in it for a short period of time I have learned alot but most importantly I ACTAULLY like the work and the work environment.

 

Yeah it can be pretty full on, cause as you would know everything is based around time limitations, but being really organised helps alot, plus a bit of pressure is good sometimes........makes you realise what you are actually capable of.

 

Bascically my job role is to support the supervisor and manager, so not much day to day operational stuff (which is GREAT) more reporting and measuring KPI's are being met both internally from the team and externally from our service providers, plus invoice queries etc. I am actually heading a special projects team also, which involves furthering the companies internal tracking system and rolling it out nationally to all our other branches and clients interstate.

my job sounds so easy compared to these!

 

However there is some knowledge required thats for sure, like knowing where the trochanteric bursa is and other stuff. also knowing what the best imaging techniques are (xray, ultrasound, ct, mri etc etc), giving patients correct preparation for scans and stuff.

I am a hospital pharmacist

 

Every day is different and keeps you on your toes! At the moment I am speciallising in sterile manufacturing (nutrition, antibiotics and infusions etc)

Sales Co-Ordinator and Team Leader for our department at OneSteel. Our department looks after the majority of coal mines in the Bowen Basin. It's always busy as the mining industry can be very demanding and they work 24 / 7 so there is no real "quiet time".
