Are Radar Detectors Illegal In Australia?

Recommended Posts

I was just searching the net and found some radar detectors for sale, I was just wondering if anyone knows if they are actually illegal to use or not. I understand that radar blockers are illegal for obvious reasons but what about detectors?

It varies state to state, in my state (Queensland) there illegal and you get a massive fine for having one.

How legal are these GPS systems which let you know where all the fix located cameras are? Their a warning device same as a radar detector. I would have thought with a radar detector by the time it detects a radar the radar has already detected you resulting in you being court speeding anyway.

Any gps based system should be legal as my gps already does this by default. No radar detects are highly sensitive and will detect radar forms kilometres away even around corners, the radar does not have to be trained on the car to be picked up.

How do you know so much about radars Cootha?

Also says they are illegal to sell/own in all other states other then QLD, have a look on gumtree and there are heaps for sale. What's the point of owning one in QLD if you are unable to use it?

Thanks Philmak for the handy link.

I dont know lots about radars in general but I do know a fair amount about the microwave spectrum which radars fall into. Well a radar is just a detector it does not emit anything, like a microphone. So you could have one and operate it without any obvious detectable/visible flags the police could pick up on. It would be pretty easy to get away with it unless it was one of the ones which sits on your dash. Most people who use one are found out because of the way they drive, since they are very sensitive you might get a false positive from any kind of device which transmits in the spectrum the detector listens at. Most people will slow down suddenly and this could be reason enough for a police officer to pull you over and give them grounds to search your vehicle. Im not a expert but i think thats how it usually happens. Radar jammers on the other hand are very delectable since they transmit as well as receive.

Anything that has EM waves present or any amount of electrons emits a physical phenomena.. This is widely exploited in computer security. Look up van phreaking for instance. The resolution it emits at just isn't high enough for cops to pick up on (if you're referring to later tech). I read a year or so ago that cops do pick up on some radars though, but *shrug* I have no idea what cops are running with these days hardware wise. Either way, the later generation radar detectors circumnavigate the previous generation's pick-up abilities.

As for OP, who cares if they're illegal, just run it if you want to. There are a plethora of ways to be sneaky and not get caught, you just have to have a bit of balls. There are dedicated forums to this, search them, there is a wealth of information. But imo, too much of a screw around, it takes a lot of effort to set it up in a way to not get caught and also either fine tuning or getting the right hard way to filter out false positives. Imo, getting something like a number plate flipper or preferably a screen mechanism is less effort and imo more effective (and fun!)

Illegal in all states except WA, which is why businesses like http://www.dontgetcaught.com.au/ can exist in Australia.

Police use a combination of radar and lidar, so you need two types of systems to detect all traps. A radar detector like most of the Beltronics or Escort branded RD's are 100% undetectable to Police Radar Detector Detectors. Check out youtube for RDD's sitting beside RD's and not picking anything up. The second system is a laser jammer. The laser frequency that Police lidar systems run on, has not been reserved, so you can buy parking sensors which interfere with this laser signal. Laser Park Pro used to be one of the more popluar brands, but they've gone insolvent and now AL Priority seems to be the way to go.

Why do you need to use one if you're a law abiding citizen and follow the road rules a.k.a. not speeding?

Because I along with many others, are not "law abiding" citizens....How's the weather up that high?

I don't speed any more, I cant afford to since being court. Experiencing 6 months without a license has been enough to slow me down on the road. A detector would come in handy the same way a GPS does. When a radar is coming up your notified and I double check my speed. Sometimes you find your a couple of K's over, nothing major but maybe enough to receive a ticket and for me would mean having no licence again.

Well yeah of course but I was specify talking more about emitted radar. By saying that any electronic device could be detected not just radar detectors.

got a smart phone, download trapster...

saved my bacon a few times by knowing where the rbt/defect stations are when knocking off from arvo shift & having to cross the city. it's a user based system where people can report & rate traps, the more people using it the better it gets.

get all your mates onto it, as i said the more users the better it will get.

i've been using it since it came out & it's saved me the hassle of being pulled into a rbt/defect station a heap of times over the years. if one pops up on my notifications, i'll just bypass that area & take a different route.

wont help you all the time, eg if you're doing mach10 on the open road & there is a random highway cop sitting in the bushes somewhere but for the local stuff it's pretty good.

I'll let all my mates know about it. Everyone on here should get onto it as well.

I'm not up on the latest gear or the rules but the last time I checked in NSW if they catch you with a radar detector it is 12 demerit points and the same fine as for Speed Dangerous or Manner Dangerous which at the time was about $1500 or $1600. Disqualification period is probably the same or similar. At that point the cops did have radar detector detectors and aside from what the other guys said above they did work and people did get busted. With the new bands and Lidar it has all changed of course but the point is don't get busted in NSW or they will hang you up by your nuts and fry you.

What phone have you got? Trapster just pounds the living shit out of mine. It get ultra hot (not from the sun), really quickly and then bogs down terribly :S most uses of trapster end in me pulling the battery to restart it.

^^^ don't let that deter anyone btw. It's a f**king great system, just not on my phone for some reason :(
