hey guys iv got an S15 with abit under 64k on the clock and im pretty certain my clutch(still factory) is on its way out. how do i definitively tell if its running out of meat and slipping without opening her up? iv just noticed recently that i really have to ride the clutch taking off especially on hills to avoid almost stalling, boostin it a bit doesnt feel like it kicks in as hard as before, every so often when im in gear and i press the clutch in to change gears it makes a weird clunk sound(is that a release bearing problem) every now and again, and finally the other weird sound i started to hear was rollin through maccaz drive through i took off slowly and i could hear a shuddering style noise comin from under the car.

thats all the information i really can describe about what im experiencing so any help on the matter would be great. atleast if the clutch is on its way out i can start saving for a new one if its the case. cheers guys

You will smell it - its a very distinct smell,
also - when your in gear, the revs increase but the car doesnt speed up anymore - slipping.

When mine was F***ed - i would let the clutch all the way out in first gear, rev and at 5000 rpm it would grab .. it made for quite a show at the traffic lights

put it in 4 th gear and slowly release the clutch dont apply the accelarator and if its on its way out you will hear a weird grinding type of noise and the car will stall. if it does this u will need a new clutch . Posted Image

also heard to try this, but wouldn't it just stall anyway being in 4th gear at like 5kph? or do you do it at like 60ks? please elaborate lol

A couple of ways you can tell.

1; Google
2; Try to take off 2nd or 3rd gear, it should stall.
3; While cruising along at about 20km/h put it in 3rd or 4th and accellerate (floor it), if the revs slowly climb as normal, its fine. BUT, if the revs come up quickly, you sir have a slipping clutch.

fine a nice hill average/slow speed then put in 4th then put your foot into it with the load against it should bog down (clutch fine) or start to rev hard and not go any where fast (clutch gone)

hope this makes sense

Just go for a drive on the freeway and floor it in 6th. Revs and boost will rise really fast if its going, as if free revving in neutral.

I don't know if anyone has heard of this technique before but I was told that if you aren't sure whether your clutch is slipping or not you just...

 nah I can't do it.

put a blanket over your front bar, slowly drive up to a wall untill you make contact. put it in second and get the revs up as you release the clutch, that'll tell you if its slipping
or chain your diff to a tree and give it some gas

either way i think he got the point

easiest way is to do a simple clutch kick in 4th

if it grabs or bogs its good
if it revs and then slowly/eventually grabs its fooked

When mine became too old take offs would often be quite annoying as every now and then it would shudder and almost stall. The gearbox was also more notchy before a fresh clutch was put in, sometimes I'd have to try several times to try and get into reverse gear.
