i just got back into playing after a 6-7 year break lol

i played all through high school, but just sort of stopped one day. Ive got my first guitar which is just a cheap Ibanez Stagestar, but i cant ever get rid of it cuz its my first guitar and i played all the gigs i ever did on it. It needs a bit of servicing after hibernating for over 6 years but yea lol.

i also recently bought an Epiphone Les Paul Studio. Its only a cheap one but I always wanted a Les Paul as Jimmy Page was and is my fav guitarist. I'll post some pics up when i get a chance.

for now its sore finger tips and lots of practice ahead.

I love how much denial i have, i thought i could jump back on and bust out the solos i used to do with my eyes closed. What used to seem slow seems bullshit fast now LOL

I know how you feel mate, I put it down for a few years when I started listening to rap/hip hop and my parents were devastated. Once I got past the whole rap phase I picked it up again and never looked back.

If you are looking for something cool to cut your teeth on, 'Since I've been loving you' by Zep is a fantastic way to re-introduce yourself to scales and modes etc. My warm up is to play every note between the first and 7th frets then back again, concentrate on clarity rather than speed. Once it becomes comfortable, try putting some musicality into it i.e. think of a song in your head and hit the notes to the beat//use string skipping etc.

I still can't shred a solo as fast as I would like but I am having informal lessons with a guy near my house that is a studio guitarist & his playing ability is out of this world.

lol i stopped cuz of hip hop as well in a way. People at school thought i was weird cuz id play Stairway to Heaven exactly like Jimmy Page, id smash out Metallica, and at lunch id have Wu Tang blazing in my walkman LOL

i just learned Sultans of Swing again, Mark Knopfler is my other fav guitarist, i gto the whole song sussed axcept for the fast bit in the second solo.

Its all coming back to me slowly. I played for so many years, but i never really learned scales, i thought it was a waste of time, id rather play guitar solos and learn songs by listening to them. I had lessons in high school and studied music all through high school. I never learned how to read music, never interested me, i dunno how i passed music without being able to read music LOL

Yeah it's a bit like that but now that I am back in the swing of things I am finding that my technical knowledge or lack thereof is stopping me from really excelling.

It's great to see people still play real instruments these days! I spend a lot of time hunting around for live bands as DJ's shit me to tears.

i havent got anything to compare it to lol

when i bought it about 10 years ago it was a cheapish guitar, i paid about 350 or 400 from memory. I like it, but until recently thats the only guitar i ever owned.

ive just read a few reviews on them as i was browsing on the net for info on the old stage star, and most of the people seem to like it and say its easy to play so meh

yea i dropped the stage star off to get serviced and set up today. Get neck shimmed and adjusted, frets polished, re string and set harmonics, new nut made from bone, just a bit of tlc. Might consider wacking in a new humbucker but we'll see how we go after the set up, cant wait!

Eddie Van Halen - the guitar is what he did to a Fender Stratocaster in the 70's.

It's legendary in guitar circles!!

I'm thinking about getting the fretboard scalloped on my Ibanez project - believe it or not, it actually makes playing harder!
Best quote I have had from a luthier at this point is $400

Essentially, I have a Korean made $400AUD guitar with $1300 worth of parts and labour:

Gotoh
Floyd Rose bridge $180
18:1 tuners $70
Dome gripper knobs $20
5 way selector $15

Switch craft input jack + plate $30
Copper shielding tape $40

DiMarzio
P.A.F Pro Humbucker $179
FRED Humbucker $189
HS-2 Single Coil $140

Elixir enamel paints
Lime $34
Mr Juice $34
Satin clear epoxy $80

Guitar tech for when I screw something up $90

Fretboard scalloping $400 - undecided yet!

Total $1411.00

It's a labour of love I tell you, haha

Literally the BEST sounding pickups I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Putting them in your LP would be a perfect match

got the stagestar back today :woot: its sooooooo much better than before. all it needs now is some grover machine heads and a new pick up.

the dude adjusted the neck, reset the action properly so the strings match the curve of the finger board, and replaced the string trees with new roller type ones cuz the strings were catching on the old ones.

f**king awesome

My rig:

2006 Fender Fat Strat (USA build) - silver body, black scratch plate
Peavey Classic 30 tube amp

Formerly owned:

1988 Fender Stratocaster (made in Japan)
2005 Gibson SG
Yamaha Semi Acoustic
Some other shitty guitars...

I've been playing since I was 13 (I'm 20 now), I'm still pretty shizen but I just play for fun.

sif you got rid of the '88 Strat. Some people reckon that the jap strats were better than USA ones.

I been sussin some 80's built strats on ebay, could be keen...

i wanna get a Schecter like Mark Knopflers

Mark Knopfler used a strat though...!

Anyway, yeah I noticed a few differences between the '88 Jap Strat and my current USA one:

Neck is more solid and has a better finish on newer one
Bridge is better quality
Pots are slightly better quality
Pickups are way better

Incidentally on my old one it had single coils (whereas my USA one has a humbucker, being a fat strat). I was originally going to get a luthier to bore out space for humbuckers and I had purchased some Seymour Duncans, but in the end I sold everything for a decent price because I got the fat strat for a bargain!

If you are looking at an 's' type guitar (strat) check out the Charvel San Dimas models; as soon as I have some spare change hanging around I will add one to the collection.

Quatersawn, compound radius one piece maple neck, Ash & Alder bodies, choice of Duncan/DiMarzio pickups and an original Floyd Rose for under $2k - Can't be beaten.

I am trying to buy some of their necks now for my RG projects; they are unreal.

Only difference being that Tom Anderson used to design Shecter guitars = win.

He now has his own custom shop in California - awesome guitars.
