it helps if you've done a pre-apprenticeship otherwise chances are even slimmer  just take anything you can who cares if its domestic.

Yeah i can imagine its gonna be hard for a while as any company is going to be a bit reluctant to put any new staff on at the moment.
Things will pick up though and the first people they will be looking to hire is cheap labor so a youngen is the best bet.

Although places like apprenticeships vic are handy they have a lot of fees for your employer and in most cases an apprentice will cost as much money as a fully qualified tradesman, so might be better off doing the good old fashioned way, hit the yellow pages find all the places around your area that suit your style of work give them a call and see if they are keen to put on an apprentice.
Thats the way i did it

if you guys are applying to jobs but not getting interviews then there is something wrong with your resumes and/or cover letters!

it doesn't matter a f**k about your pre-app or school results as long as you passed, its all about how you present yourself in your resume, cover letters and interviews.
good reference's really help too not just a guy saying you were ok you need reference's that say they begged you to keep working for them!

oh and if your having problems passing pre-app subjects or just scrapping in, you may want to reconsider as it only gets harder.

i was looking for ages but lucked out with an old school friend who has his own plumbing business and offered me an apprenticeship once he knew i was looking. try asking everyone u know... someones brothers friends cousin will be a tradie looking for a cheap worker. and when they turn you down for the apprenticeship offer yourself as cash labour on the weekends. good way to get your foot in the door and show them how keen you are. most tradesmen i know umm and ahh about putting on an apprentice because they dont think they have enough work then when they do have one they cant believe how they got by without

yep good advice tell everyone you looking, tell your dads mates when there over for a beer or bbq, they all know someone how has a business or what ever.
And also as said above even if they say there isnt much work on to put another bloke on at the moment just say you will be happy to do a few weeks work for nothing to see how i go.
You can still claim some center link benefits so you will have cash to get by, and worse case scenario they dont hire you but you leave with some experience and a reference, if you do a good job then they will give you a tops reference for being a keen hard working young bloke who was happy to put in 2 weeks un paid work for some experience.

as said earlier in the thread offering yourself for a free trial is a good way to get your foot in, they have nothing to loose however if your wanting to get into the commercial side of any trade a red-card is required to enter a work site.
