That is a very comprehensive list of free program alternatives

glad to see Spybot SnD made it on the list... strongly recommended as it supercedes the standard norton internet security on several occasions

Very, very nice list! However you've missed out on what is probably the biggest and best bit of open source/ freeware available:

LINUX! The free alternative to Windows or Mac OSX. If you don't game on your PC, then Linux is a brilliant, free alternative to the expensive operating systems. Especially if you only use it to browse the net and view emails.
One of the best things about it is that there are virtually no viruses for it, it's secure, and it doesn't magically slow down over time like Windows does.
On some computers it can take a little effort to set up, but on most modern PCs it will work straight away.

My distro of choice for beginners is Ubuntu. Grab it from http://www.ubuntu.com
Download the Live CD, boot off the CD and have a play with it without installing anything onto your hard drive and see if it suits you.

you should add BackTrack to OS, its a derivative of SLAX, very good for security etc. Can be dl and directly put onto USB or CD.

Personally I recommend and use Nod32 for antivirus and Spybot Search & Destroy for spyware.

Nod isn't free but it's much cheaper than Norton and shits over it.

Defraggler - http://www.defraggler.com/ (same people who make CCleaner)

best bit is the ability to defrag single files

- if you download the codec pack on the site you just put it in the codec directory - no need to install all the seperate codecs;

ps. even though it can be done using lots of other types of video editing software as well as macromedia flash - it's quite an involved task. this one really zooms in on the task of "photo slideshow" and you can make a slideshow from a directory in minutes, whereas with a video editor or flash or swish, setting up each photo, then making it spin, or zoom - then transition etc... just too much time for quick jobs like birthdays, youtube-shrine slideshows etc.

hey mate

do you want to add web apps as well? i was thinking content management systems like Drupal, Joomla/Mambo, PHP Nuke/Zikula and CMSMS.

Also, not sure if you're interested, but there's a couple all in one servers as well. XAMPP and WAMP include the lot like apache, php, a few different sql's etc (those 2 are both for windows btw).

ive been using it a fair bit and very impressed so far, its brilliant - so much better than ms virtual pc
